Since the launch of the DEBUT site I have wanted to have a simple clean site to act as an index to the places where I spend the most time on the web. As vcard / business card websites are all the vogue in the last few months I decided this was the perfect time to execute. solves a number of problems for me; not the least of which it will catch the people who hear, but phonetically misunderstand ““, and hopefully improve my search engine ranking on just “Arley”. More than that, I find personal projects an awesome opportunity to cut my teeth on new technology and practices. (more…)

Introducing; My own URL shortener

August 20th, 2009 | 356 Comments | Recent Work

URL shorteners have gotten a lot more use in the last couple years with the increasing popularity of Twitter. I’ve even been seeing them in print publications like .net magazine. Who wouldn’t want a shorter and more memorable URL? Shorteners are a great way of saving space and characters. As great as they are, every silver lining must have a cloud. (more…)

The Furniture Outlet

April 6th, 2009 | 3 Comments | Recent Work

This weekend was one of those rare times when I do work outside of normal week day hours. My client at the Furniture Outlet in Kincardine was eager to get the new site up as soon as possible, and I was all too happy to accommodate the weird hours that come with retail. (more…)

Good Students and Good Causes

The second of two very large sites I recently worked on just went live this week. Nipissing Universities Prospective Students site is geared towards high school students that are Post-Secondary-Shopping. The site is built using the institutes standing ASP framework, which I have to say is quite optimized in terms of how many includes and variable calls are used. I definitely learned a lot of tricks on this one. I also brushed up quite a bit on some CSS techniques like rollover sprites. (more…)

Independent Revive is Live

New Independent SiteAbout a year and a half ago I started doing weekly updates for a local Kincardine newspaper. Their site was a static HTML site with the purpose of delivering the news to a couple thousand viewers a week. The Kincardine Independent is the only locally owned and independent news organization in the area, so they are regarded as straight shooting, and not under the thumb of nationally owned syndicates. Piel Branding

July 24th, 2008 | Comment | Recent Work

Yesterday I finished work on the Piel Construction logo for friend and client Dave Piel. Dave is well known in the area, and we wanted a non-cliché logo (without hammers or houses etc.) We ended up with this. There is some nice flowing texture we liked since it can be representative of a saw blade, or something more elemental (we neighbours of Lake Huron might identify with) (more…)

Jake and the Fundamentals

Today was the launch of the site for North Bay and area rockers Jake and the Fundamentals. I got this project through my old friend, and bassist Danny Colomby. Though I have known him for five years, today (on the music page) was my first time hearing him play, and it makes me itchy to see this band. Check out their Upcoming Shows page; these guys are playing everywhere. (more…)

Recent Work vol. 1

April 14th, 2008 | Comment | Recent Work

I recently read an article about freelance philosophies that really opened my eyes. For the last year I have busier than ever without ever taking the time to work on my own web presence. I always brushed it off; I’m too busy making client sites to worry about my own. The author went on to explain that as a developer I need to establish a solid web-presence, and not just my own website.

It has inspired me to start a Recent Work section of my site. It’s the perfect compromise; updating my website while highlighting a few client projects. (more…)
